When Matthew's parents are killed in a car crash he's sent to live with his Aunt Molly and Uncle Gil. Given that he tried to drown their daughter (his cousin) 6 years ago, you can imagine Gil and Molly aren't thrilled about this. The story is told from Gil's point of view as he is convinced that 17-year-old Matthew is still a psychopath who is trying to fool everyone into believing he's changed from his nasty childhood self to a charming sophisticated young man. But he can't fool Gil...
This is the most literary 'literary thriller' I have read. I was turning pages because I desperately wanted to know what was going to happen. I really appreciated the slow decent into madness and adored the ending of this novel. For fans of American Psycho and We Need to Talk about Kevin.
