I’m a huge fan of Jennifer Saint’s retellings of Greek myths because I find her writing to be very accessible, particularly for someone who isn’t overly familiar with all the gods and myths like myself. This time, we get Atalanta’s story after previously having had Ariadne’s and Elektra’s. Atalanta was a human under Artemis’ protection in the forest and was the only female Argonaut on Jason’s quest to steal the Golden Fleece when he tried to reclaim his kingdom. Whilst she was only mentioned once or twice in the original myths, this retelling explores her side of the story and asks the question as to why she was left out of the heroics even though she could run faster than any man and could shoot an arrow to pinpoint accuracy. What I like about these retellings is that we get the female point of view which is largely ignored in the original myths, however they aren’t overtly feminist novels because there isn’t necessarily a happy ending, which just serves to remind us that Greek mythology is a man’s world.
