“This is not just another novel about a dead girl. When she arrived in New York on her 18th birthday carrying nothing but $600 cash and a stolen camera, Alice Lee was looking for a fresh start. Now, just one month later, she is the city's latest Jane Doe, an unidentified murder victim.”
Heading into the book knowing Alice was going to die, and soon, was a bit strange, however I could not put it down and read it in a day because I was heavily invested in what happened to her. I needed to know! It has a The Lovely Bones vibe about it (narrated by a ghost, Alice)
and it was a compelling emotional read about being a female in today's world. I could empathise with the choices Alice and Ruby both made which led them both to New York, and it was a shame in my opinion that they never actually met.
I don't normally read crime novels so I liked that this was a different approach. It’s certainly more about Alice herself, and who she was rather than the fact she died and the murder itself (though it was satisfying to know who killed her). Can’t really say too much else without giving anything away! It’s certainly worth the hype though in my opinion.
