As an Aussie who is here by myself, I could relate to Jess’ feelings as she makes a mercy dash home from London for her unwell grandmother. Some of it hit a little too close to home, but thankfully I don’t (to my knowledge anyhow!) have a decades-old murder mystery in my family’s past. Jess discovers her family secret, and starts to investigate exactly what happened in 1959 to her grandmother’s brother’s family. Secrets are exposed and family ties are tested in this vast historical novel which alternates between 2018 and 1959, and examines the ways in which trauma can echo down through generations. If you’re a fan of Kate Morton like I am, or like a good dual timeline story, then you won’t be disappointed.
