Late in the night, fourteen-year-old Sam Watson steps onto a quiet overpass, climbs over the rail and looks down at the road far below. At the other end of the same bridge, an old man, Vic, smokes his last cigarette. The two see each other across the void. A fateful connection is made, and an unlikely friendship blooms.

I JUST WANT TO GIVE SAM THE BIGGEST HUG.

Sam’s coming-of-age story had me feeling all kinds of ways. I went on a rollercoaster of sad to thankful, anxious to excited, heartbroken to hopeful and then all over again. It’s a beautiful story about family and friend relationships and how important it is to connect with each other and to try to understand our differences. A very easy read which I would recommend to anyone and I think it’s a book people should read. It sheds light on a lot of hard subjects - to tell you what they are would be to give too much away. We’re all in agreement that it would also be a great book to teach in schools!

(And I’m a sucker for a cool mullet so this cover sold it for me!)
