I love it when a book completely floors me with its scope, imagination, and beauty of language. I read In Ascension on a long-distance flight and couldn’t put it down – not even to numbly watch a movie as is often the case after ten hours of flying! I was asked recently what it was about and after much frowning and opening and shutting of my mouth I stuttered, ‘it’s about a person travelling from the very depths of the ocean to the far reaches of the galaxy and what they discover about themselves and earth on the way’. In Ascension is disturbing, probing and profound and impossible to compare to anything I have read before. I can’t wait to see how such a wild and dazzling book will be received and I’ll even go so far as to mutter ‘Booker potentional’? You heard it here first.
