If you want to know what real bravery looks like read this new book by Doug Gold set in Greece during the Second World War. A total page turner, it is based on a true story about a New Zealand soldier called Peter Blunden who seeks refuge in the home of a Thesalonniki dressmaker ,Tasoula, and her teenage son, Thanasis. Germans are everywhere in the area, stopping and searching people and their houses, looking for POW escapees and members of the resistance. It is impossible to know who can be trusted and who will give you away in return for a loaf of bread. New, young apprentice seamstress Thalia, quickly has to decide where her loyalties lie and whether she is courageous enough to stand up to the cruel, brutal invaders. It’s edge of your seat nerve-wracking stuff.
