This is like a warm hug of a book, perfect to curl up with in front of the fire on a cold winter’s night. Set immediately after WW1 it is about a group of young women and men in the small village of Hazelbourne. The men are attempting to recover from the war, and the women are trying to readjust to their suddenly restrictive lives now they no longer have the jobs and the freedom they had while the men were away fighting. It’s rare to find a book set in this time where the characters have brilliantly caustic back and forth banter. This is witty, compassionate and smart. A great historical read.
