This is Sebastian Faulks but not as we know him. The Seventh Son is set in the very near future (yes, you heard right) and is nothing like the historical stories Faulks is known for. Yet readers familiar with his work will recognise his beautiful writing style, his skilful weaving of plot, rich development of character, and his wonderful depiction of place. I read this in two days. Couldn’t put it down. It is captivating and unsettling and asks one of THE big questions - what makes us human? So much to unpack, and I must warn you there is a fair bit of info dumping but I learnt so much about biology and evolution that all is forgiven! I don’t want to even tell you what this is about because the joy and shock is in the discovery. Let’s just say it starts with a woman offering to be a surrogate, but the child she gives birth to is not who she, or anyone else, believes it to be. Please read The Seventh Son so we can discuss - especially the ending!
