You may well already know the name Dr Emma Espiner from her podcast, journalism or tv appearances but if you don’t you will enjoy discovering her in this her first book. A memoir, it takes us through all the significant parts of her life leading up to her decision to train as a medic and then her role as a junior doctor during the pandemic at Middlemore Hospital. Not so much showing us how she chose her new career but why she did so. A need to do something that really matters, that makes a difference to people’s lives. Only she didn’t just become a doctor but also a writer and at the same time as working nights. I like the way memoirs let you peak into the lives of other people through their own stories and as Emma says when she asks a patient what is wrong with them she is really asking them to tell her a story.
